Description
A general practitioner (GP) has a variety of responsibilities, including:
Patient care
Examine patients, diagnose health issues, and prescribe and administer medication. GPs also monitor patient progress and response to treatment.
Referrals
GPs refer patients to hospitals and other medical services for urgent or specialist care.
Health promotion
GPs advise patients on health care, including healthy diet and exercise, and promote health education.
Administrative work
GPs sign repeat prescriptions, death certificates, and fitness for work statements. They also prepare letters and reports, and attend staff meetings.
Liaison
GPs liaise with other medical professionals, such as midwives, pharmacists, and psychiatrists.
Reporting
GPs report births, deaths, and notifiable diseases to government authorities.
Teaching
GPs may observe and assess the work of trainee GPs and medical students, and in some cases, teach at medical schools or hospitals.
GPs are part of a wider team that promotes, prevents, and offers treatment. They treat common medical conditions and care for people with chronic illness and long-term conditions.
The position is full time Sunday - Thursday with a competitive salary based on qualifications and experience.
Requirements
Medical Degree.
Successful completion of a 3-year residency training program.
Registration with an appropriate health professions board.
Proven experience as a General Practitioner.
Adherence to health and ethical codes, including when under duress.
Attendance at medical conferences.
Personable, supportive disposition.
