Description: Diagnosing disease: Using laboratory techniques to diagnose the presence and stage of diseases, and to study their nature, cause, and development
Examining samples: Examining samples of tissue, fluids, or organs taken from the body, such as biopsies, to diagnose illness
Performing tests: Performing or supervising tests on blood, body fluids, and tissue samples
Interpreting results: Interpreting test results and advising clinicians on further investigation
Writing pathology reports: Writing pathology reports that detail the analysis of samples and findings
Managing the lab: Organizing work in the lab, supervising staff, and maintaining laboratory equipment
Consulting with other professionals: Consulting with other health professionals to discuss patient treatment
Researching and developing: Researching and developing new tests, treatments, and vaccines

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in biology, physical sciences, or a related field.
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
4 to 7 years’ internship and residency training, specializing in pathology.
